Ingredients
Scale
For the Salisbury Steak Patties:
- 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
- 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (for cooking)
For the Gravy:
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup of sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 cups of beef broth
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water (for thickening)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, finely chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 to 6 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval patty, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Sear the Patties: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- Prepare the Gravy: In the same skillet, add the butter and let it melt. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms (if using) and cook for about 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft and the mushrooms are browned.
- Make the Gravy: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Thicken the Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Slowly pour the slurry into the simmering gravy, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Simmer the Patties: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over each patty. Cover the skillet and let the patties simmer in the gravy for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are cooked through and tender.
- Serve: Serve the Salisbury steak hot, smothered in gravy, alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables.
