- 500g plain flour
- 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tsp cream of tartar
- 2 tbsp caster sugar
- 75g unsalted butter, cubed
- 300ml buttermilk
- 1 egg, beaten (for glaze)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven
- Set the Temperature: Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan)/425°F/gas mark 7.
Prepare the Dry Ingredients
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, and cream of tartar.
- Add Sugar: Stir in the caster sugar.
Incorporate the Butter
- Cut in the Butter: Add the cubed butter to the dry ingredients and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add the Buttermilk
- Pour in the Buttermilk: Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
- Mix to Form a Dough: Stir with a knife until the dough comes together. It should be soft but not too sticky.
Shape the Scones
- Roll Out the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead briefly. Roll it out to about 2.5cm thick.
- Cut Out the Scones: Use a round cutter to cut out scones and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Glaze and Bake
- Glaze the Scones: Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and well-risen.
