Delia Smith’s Green Tomato Chutney is a traditional British preserve made from unripe tomatoes, onions, apples, and a variety of spices. It is simmered to perfection to create a thick, flavorful condiment that pairs wonderfully with cheese, cold meats, and sandwiches.

- 3 lbs green tomatoes, chopped
- 1.5 lbs onions, finely chopped
- 1.5 lbs cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
- 1 pint malt vinegar
- 1 lb brown sugar
- 2 oz salt
- 1 tbsp mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp allspice
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the green tomatoes, onions, and apples.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large pot, mix tomatoes, onions, apples, and vinegar.
- Add Spices: Stir in the sugar, salt, mustard seeds, ground ginger, black pepper, and allspice.
- Bring to Boil: Heat the mixture until it starts to boil.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 1.5-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Check Consistency: The chutney should thicken to a jam-like consistency.
- Sterilize Jars: While the chutney simmers, sterilize the jars.
- Fill Jars: Pour the hot chutney into sterilized jars, leaving some space at the top.
- Seal Jars: Seal the jars immediately and let them cool.
- Store: Store in a cool, dark place for at least a month before using.
