Description

Delia Smith’s Green Tomato Chutney is a traditional British preserve made from unripe tomatoes, onions, apples, and a variety of spices. It is simmered to perfection to create a thick, flavorful condiment that pairs wonderfully with cheese, cold meats, and sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs green tomatoes, chopped
  • 1.5 lbs onions, finely chopped
  • 1.5 lbs cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped
  • 1 pint malt vinegar
  • 1 lb brown sugar
  • 2 oz salt
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp allspice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the green tomatoes, onions, and apples.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large pot, mix tomatoes, onions, apples, and vinegar.
  3. Add Spices: Stir in the sugar, salt, mustard seeds, ground ginger, black pepper, and allspice.
  4. Bring to Boil: Heat the mixture until it starts to boil.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 1.5-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. Check Consistency: The chutney should thicken to a jam-like consistency.
  7. Sterilize Jars: While the chutney simmers, sterilize the jars.
  8. Fill Jars: Pour the hot chutney into sterilized jars, leaving some space at the top.
  9. Seal Jars: Seal the jars immediately and let them cool.
  10. Store: Store in a cool, dark place for at least a month before using.
